It's not as though I ever really stop producing handmade but this dress is the first item I've finished for my kids since February. The last Kids Clothing week was a complete bust for me. Between a great surge in my business and a 3 week bout with Bronchitis I never made it beyond picking fabrics and cutting out patterns. So now, as I'm winding down the custom order side of my business for the summer, it was important to make something new for one of my family amidst all the stock sewing I've been doing for the shop.<br />
<br />
I can't remember when I came across this <a href="http://icandyhandmade.blogspot.co.nz/2012/02/tutorial-and-pattern-jcrew-knockoff.html?m=1" target="_blank">Striped Relay Tutorial</a> over at iCandy Handmade, I'm sure it was almost 2 years ago because I remember being intimidated by having to size it for a smaller child. However, here is one of those beautiful examples of procrastination working out because now my almost 6 yr old is wearing a size 5 perfectly. I love dresses with leggings, my daughter is incredibly active, always on a bike and the long, flowy dresses she loves to wear are highly impractical. Outfits like this are the happy medium in our house.<br />

To make the dress I followed the tutorial right up to the last steps where instead of finishing the edges with elastic trim I used the double needle on all the hems. I haven't done many project with the twin needles so far but I have to say I love how it turned out. I did upsize the bow a bit, the first bow I made with the measurements on the pattern became a hair bow with just a piece of 1/8"elastic looped through and a bow that was 2" larger was put on the dress.<br />

This was such an easy pattern to follow (mostly sewn on the serger which I love!) that I'm now thinking I may watch for some fall fabrics and do a couple up for the next school year. I think by widening the arm openings slightly it would be a great layering piece once the weather turns cool.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16161153656247227429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5063811194463319004.post-78811547180035036882014-03-19T04:00:00.000-07:002014-03-19T04:00:03.507-07:00KCW Prep - Spring 2014Alright, I am determined to find the balance between sewing, blogging and managing my home business so I'm going back to the advance prep version of KCW. Here I sit, 19 days out from the start and I have 4 patterns selected to sew, a potential 5th and still trying to decide if I want/need to sew anything for the little guy. I hate to leave him out but realistically he has a closet full of t-shirts and a stack of shorts as tall as he is, so any boy sewing is really gratuitous...doesn't mean it won't happen but for the moment I'll try to maintain my tenuous grasp on what is achievable in a week.<br />
<br />
For all the patterns I'm choosing to sew my intent is to have the patterns traced & cut, have the fabric washed & cut and edge finished as required. I'm aiming this season to get that gratifying pile of finished clothes by the end of the week. The past few seasons I seem to end up with a pile of mostly finished pieces or worse one or 2 pieces done and pile of fabric waiting on me. <br />
<br />
The other conflict I have is time of day. Because my business is sewing I tend to prioritize the paid work and try to get through it in the first part of the day. That leaves me evenings to do my own sewing....not my creative time of day! I love reading about people who sew late into the night and have a pile of goodies for their littles in the morning, it makes me laugh because I literally become unable to sew at 9pm...there is a 90% chance that any seams sewn at that time of day will be ripped. Don't get me wrong, there is no one who would accuse me of being a morning person. You are just as unlikely to find me at the machine at 6am as at 9pm....I need a good couple of hours and a cup of coffee before I'm ready to sew anything. My sweet spot is 9am, that's when my studio is bright with morning sunshine and I find all my creativity. <br />
<br />
Now for what I'm planning to sew, this season is all about the dress starting with an online tutorial & pattern: <a href="http://icandyhandmade.blogspot.co.nz/2012/02/tutorial-and-pattern-jcrew-knockoff.html?m=1" target="_blank">Striped Relay Dress.</a> My daughter is a small size 5 so the size 5 pattern should be ok, but I'm thinking of adding an inch or so to the length just to keep it as a dress through the summer and not turn into a tunic. I have some fun knit fabrics from <a href="http://www.girlcharlee.com/" target="_blank">Girl Charlee</a> that I'm excited to use, still need to narrow down which one will be used for this dress. <br />
<br />
My next project is intended for this spring, the <a href="http://www.eatsleepmake.com/2013/10/piped-peplum-top-free-pattern.html" target="_blank">Piped Peplum Top.</a> I'm thinking of a solid cotton with simple contrast piping. Something simple to "fancy-up" a pair of pants, who knows maybe she'll be more willing to wear them?!<br />
<br />
My next 2 planned patterns are old school fabric store patterns. I learned to sew with these and when I saw my local shop clearing out their stock for $1.50-$2.00 ea I stocked up. So I'm planning on New Look 6202 and Simplicity 1670. I have a couple of modifications planned but my daughter has picked the view she likes best for each and I've agreed to let her come and pick out the fabrics so we're both looking forward to having a couple of dresses added into the mix for Spring. <br />
<br />
So that is my list and I'm excited to get started, maybe a little fabric shopping this weekend, probably trying to talk myself out of the coat that I also have a pattern for and I'm dying to make....but mostly I'm trying to clear some space on my cutting table by getting all those other projects out of here so I can sew for myself while the sun is shining. <br />

Paired with a little Chartreuse Kona Cotton I think this set is so sweet and fresh for a little boy while still feeling completely modern.<br />
<br />
I loved it so much I had to go ahead and reorder the fabric...I'm thinking of a baby blanket for the shop maybe, or who knows, it could be another baby set, we'll have to wait and see!<br />

My stand by gift was always the eclectic mix of "must haves" for mommy-hood - the cup holder for the stroller, hooks to hold your purse, the bags to hold a dirty diaper (because we've all been in that washroom with no garbage before, how does that even happen!?) - and typically I'd also include an outfit or pajama's for around 9mths+ because that's where most of my shower gifts seemed to taper off. What is your favorite thing to give as a baby gift? Do you resist the teeny tiny clothes or jump in with both feet and buy the whole collection for the new baby?<br />

Putting all the little cards in the tiny envelopes and writing all my school friends' names on them...then waiting all day to see who gave you a card. It was right up there with Birthday's and Christmas as far as I was concerned. Now that my own children are off to school it's weeks of planning and choosing what little gift & card we want to hand out. This year I started my search on <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/threadbykristen/fun-stuff-for-the-holidays/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>, DANGEROUS! I kept having to remind myself that I only have one class full of gifts/cards to give this year, plus a couple for some friends.<br />
<br />
So as a way of celebrating the many, many fabulous ideas I found I thought I would share them with you here:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you are still scrambling for a last minute Valentine's Card idea most of the links will take you to a free printable. Unfortunately that is still a little beyond my capabilities, however I was able to turn some limited desk topping skills and some supplies from around the house into a fun gift & card. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To make these "Having a Ball" Valentine's I used some left over business cards as bag toppers and because they are a standard template in MS Word all I had to do was layout a single card and print on my color printer. I deliberately kept the text simple since I wanted to leave room for my daughter to personalize the Valentine's somewhat. In the finished batch, she's applied stamps and stickers to the white space around the card. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next I out a bouncy ball from the local party supply store and put it in a treat bag, then stapled the treat bags to the cards. All that's left is some decorative stamps and stickers for my daughter to apply, along with her name and they are ready to go. Fast, economical and best of all using up supplies I already had!</div>

It's made me recognize that a lot of the projects we sew for our families take time that is so easily dismissed because at the end it was only a pair of pajama's or a dress. Now, because I really am only doing the hour per day, and a broken hour at that. I found myself on day 3 with just one pair of pj's ready. In my plan at the start of the week, I had assumed that I would have both pairs done and probably a good start on the nightgown. Ah, reality! Such a cruel mistress! <br />
<br />
For this pair of pj's I started with a pair of pajama pants that were a little long and traced them, adding seam allowance, hem and room for the elastic waist. (In this photo I have drawn it too narrow at the waist, if you use this method remember to add more width than I am showing - I had to redraw it and forgot to retake the photo.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxDGGujsTJXDmsWZn4WIAHevGJEdyAlGVc5xp3XdyizBg8FeKKpFQx5H6krg1xvBs_nErCgzL6s8-Wp9Sh3gA9uX_4huTG4jBSkqwWMo7ZHSCvs7NKsiXuez_wcOCWL2_2RhetHkZ4t2mU/s1600/IMG_1674.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxDGGujsTJXDmsWZn4WIAHevGJEdyAlGVc5xp3XdyizBg8FeKKpFQx5H6krg1xvBs_nErCgzL6s8-Wp9Sh3gA9uX_4huTG4jBSkqwWMo7ZHSCvs7NKsiXuez_wcOCWL2_2RhetHkZ4t2mU/s1600/IMG_1674.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
For the shirt I used the <a href="http://www.danamadeit.com/2013/02/tutorial-and-free-pattern-5-steps-to-the-basic-tee.html" target="_blank">MADE Basic tee tutorial</a>. This is the first time I've used the pattern pieces from the tutorial since they are offered in a 4T-5T but it made it even faster to be able to simple print and cut the pattern. I did extend the sleeve length since it's winter here and if anyone else is reading this from the NE you know it's been a REAL winter this year!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisDF1i5E9mxBMfQOUzi3ZOg_wSBxzBDM8Yp9wNlxgKFgR0_OceZeHb7YFe8CDdTx7S_dDJd_OfiTKxqi_XjxXaOOicUIlJfLNa9GLMBL9Pn2yKTxzStelB0fOuov3UVqvYGQLomnbJCk-E/s1600/IMG_1672.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisDF1i5E9mxBMfQOUzi3ZOg_wSBxzBDM8Yp9wNlxgKFgR0_OceZeHb7YFe8CDdTx7S_dDJd_OfiTKxqi_XjxXaOOicUIlJfLNa9GLMBL9Pn2yKTxzStelB0fOuov3UVqvYGQLomnbJCk-E/s1600/IMG_1672.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Of course it wouldn't be KCW if I didn't decide to do something I've never done. So I decided to cut some of the shapes out of the pattern and applique them on the shirt. I will admit to having no idea how to do this but vaguely remember reading something last year on how to applique so working from that foggy memory I used a heat n'bond product to put the appliques on the t-shirt, then I put some interfacing on the back of the shirt fabric since it's a thin jersey. Finally I finished the appliques with a satin stitch around the whole thing. I just hope they stay on through the wash! <br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq1oxh62HcuYLslXVHtq0x41jmh9hRYqtc7lQnsTO92f4zjEn1uNU1KQg0ClT1kuYPDohMi7HGO2w8GfHRXzvDszcvx8_Uhhlxi4ryOvlTt8Fx2z29ze9wyOcdIA5HPLb049d1mHlOrbL0/s1600/Social+Media-001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq1oxh62HcuYLslXVHtq0x41jmh9hRYqtc7lQnsTO92f4zjEn1uNU1KQg0ClT1kuYPDohMi7HGO2w8GfHRXzvDszcvx8_Uhhlxi4ryOvlTt8Fx2z29ze9wyOcdIA5HPLb049d1mHlOrbL0/s1600/Social+Media-001.jpg" height="200" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
From there I cheated, or at least it feels like cheating, and used my serger to sew everything possible. All the pant seams, all the top seams except the cuffs which I used my sewing machine for. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0ALINREemLfIqI9wPyA6gVfdh63mtOC7_f01Ka8TRgqu22IvChu4QsNtUyF5v1XnIcaJEZ-X4RH0NuNzuFKLHS3-w_kssgAgx6oFxCaAVBXioZsDndFl7kpQb8neuBKuKgNNNneaPFQiy/s1600/IMG_1676.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0ALINREemLfIqI9wPyA6gVfdh63mtOC7_f01Ka8TRgqu22IvChu4QsNtUyF5v1XnIcaJEZ-X4RH0NuNzuFKLHS3-w_kssgAgx6oFxCaAVBXioZsDndFl7kpQb8neuBKuKgNNNneaPFQiy/s1600/IMG_1676.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And here is my smiling guy hamming it up with what he's calling the Snap! Pajama's.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLP_P5NjxZBGdeubLgmiJow6gxbPxRAKqoVKnw6fp2gmhESUsxaXcfvgKAvWVxKx09byplt2dcUvES1ahh9JepndJX0K8Yqo6Cn6irBBvWjRLQWhSAQ8muGuSlPQ6YG2TQdOIw1BE85tsO/s1600/Social+Media.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLP_P5NjxZBGdeubLgmiJow6gxbPxRAKqoVKnw6fp2gmhESUsxaXcfvgKAvWVxKx09byplt2dcUvES1ahh9JepndJX0K8Yqo6Cn6irBBvWjRLQWhSAQ8muGuSlPQ6YG2TQdOIw1BE85tsO/s1600/Social+Media.jpg" height="200" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And if anyone has any tips for how to applique properly I would love to hear them! They made these pajama's so much more fun.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16161153656247227429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5063811194463319004.post-58301693167424891822014-02-03T04:00:00.000-08:002014-02-03T04:00:00.259-08:00KCW - Day 1 - Pattern printing and Fabric ChoicesI am filled with admiration for all those women who manage to sew for KCW, do their photography and have amazing blog posts all at the same time. My previous seasons of sewing I have tried to accomplish all of this, I've done the prep work in advance, cutting fabric and patterns ahead of time. What I've found is that between my 2 active children, my etsy shops which inevitably get busy and life in general something always goes wrong and it stresses me out. So this season I decided to participate on my own schedule. I'm still sewing my hour/day, sometimes more, but I'm blogging this all a week late so I can still manage my life. <br />
<br />
I also thought I would go through this season from the very beginning. Other than a little advance thought about which patterns and items I wanted to complete as listed <a href="http://threadbykristen.blogspot.ca/2014/01/kids-clothing-week-winter.html" target="_blank">here</a> I even shopped my stash as part of Day 1. I love that I finally have enough fabric collected that I can dream up projects and start work on them right away. Given that many of my project ideas strike at nap time or late at night when the fabric stores have closed this is a real win. <br />
<br />
So here is what I managed to accomplish in my first hour of sewing for my kids (please forgive the lackluster photographs, they get better as the week goes on, I promise):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-GVJf9tlZkRkjcVsuLneHbL59A5XRnimLJTkWCJgEvBESQIu5a_Gh2TDT38002a-4xahJ7UDQyLZZwj4or4PpcwUQhJ0EktP-8y2YMZcPlYJ6aQCe4SHSwy36l0GtgCi6lbQp0PQvd5_V/s1600/IMG_1658.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-GVJf9tlZkRkjcVsuLneHbL59A5XRnimLJTkWCJgEvBESQIu5a_Gh2TDT38002a-4xahJ7UDQyLZZwj4or4PpcwUQhJ0EktP-8y2YMZcPlYJ6aQCe4SHSwy36l0GtgCi6lbQp0PQvd5_V/s1600/IMG_1658.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
These are all the fabrics I'm expecting to sew with this week, less the fabric for a dress. I just couldn't decide where I wanted to go with that yet. Practicality suggests a play fabric but who said it ALL had to be practical?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZLniqDuAk1LJAIt0J7mv2akLBa9ehBAb-rUO4rOLWLAvPtb7695DJ2tb6Locf9rAMKfzk_OdCTkX5tZqxGFSJ_IlBYaUsVEeIOSMLzBHMIUtJ897oJu-yAknUI3oJg2gLnjg0yfCCJOA1/s1600/IMG_1659.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZLniqDuAk1LJAIt0J7mv2akLBa9ehBAb-rUO4rOLWLAvPtb7695DJ2tb6Locf9rAMKfzk_OdCTkX5tZqxGFSJ_IlBYaUsVEeIOSMLzBHMIUtJ897oJu-yAknUI3oJg2gLnjg0yfCCJOA1/s1600/IMG_1659.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0hRJIYeSRp3zSNXVLTDsZJUcb7L4KpXChoo7J9hgDYaC_n4SDbyfO8nC0voBCjhF5t9Q4UFPlpGwYvsbROTP7w3W8aNN-lFrv9tmuEXEB4nC6F0726dG-IbWVHfh17FQgNC8INCF3LAsI/s1600/IMG_1660.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0hRJIYeSRp3zSNXVLTDsZJUcb7L4KpXChoo7J9hgDYaC_n4SDbyfO8nC0voBCjhF5t9Q4UFPlpGwYvsbROTP7w3W8aNN-lFrv9tmuEXEB4nC6F0726dG-IbWVHfh17FQgNC8INCF3LAsI/s1600/IMG_1660.JPG" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Destined to be 2 pairs of pajama's for the little guy, I have a fun, snuggly flannel print and 2 knits to make a wintery pair for immediate wear and a t-shirt I started last year (kind of cheating, I know) to hem and pair with a lightweight Spider-Man print fabric. This is the first time my little guy has really weighted in on the fabric choice so I'm excited to finish these and get them into circulation for him. Well, that and the fact that many of him pajama's only reach mid-calf of late.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For my daughter it is always about the nightgown. I'm torn on the pattern, usually I just do a long-sleeved peasant-style dress but maybe this time I'll adapt one of the other dress patterns and mix-it up a little....juries still out on this one.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja3Rv_Y8oRhlHvlvGkgnSb3qVyrHBOfdTAGZul3NkFo3CmKIrFvJa_x-JwhwSgtS_UOg5HxCRfoRrq7uL90BiNAs6CKfEeLE_injHASdUZIm0yNuzizI6qANikzarmZFMgcYHsKWHNACEI/s1600/IMG_1663.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja3Rv_Y8oRhlHvlvGkgnSb3qVyrHBOfdTAGZul3NkFo3CmKIrFvJa_x-JwhwSgtS_UOg5HxCRfoRrq7uL90BiNAs6CKfEeLE_injHASdUZIm0yNuzizI6qANikzarmZFMgcYHsKWHNACEI/s1600/IMG_1663.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another project for the boy, I want to do a vest to layer him up this season and next as it hopefully starts to warm up. I've pulled out 2 fleece fabrics but I may swap out the blue for some blue knit accents. He's been dying to wear his "puffy" vest lately so this will be an excellent surprise.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRJjSDxoN87wE9HLBGIVmH6hrbbYmC9FVUWHBzwZPZ3CVqxxhrT0EuPa668IqbCuSfzV3ygqbIRjwsFKOClV8enPp8yv-NTre7GqG8oUd9hgLAoP3BF9oHvDijcBZq4cCmbGlF8_zBtZ-d/s1600/IMG_1664.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRJjSDxoN87wE9HLBGIVmH6hrbbYmC9FVUWHBzwZPZ3CVqxxhrT0EuPa668IqbCuSfzV3ygqbIRjwsFKOClV8enPp8yv-NTre7GqG8oUd9hgLAoP3BF9oHvDijcBZq4cCmbGlF8_zBtZ-d/s1600/IMG_1664.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Continuing with the vest theme, the little guy got a lot of Jake and the Neverland Pirates toys over the holidays and he has been asking for a Jake vest, so here is the start. I've even printed off the Frontier Vest Pattern by Dana of Made you can get a copy <a href="http://www.danamadeit.com/2008/07/tutorial-and-pattern-frontier-vest.html" target="_blank">here</a>, complete with a tutorial on making a quick western-style vest.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm a bit of a fanatic when bringing new fabric home and it tends to hit the washing machine before it makes it into the drawers so I am literally ready to do some cutting. I know it's a matter of some debate as to whether fabric should be pre-washed and pre-shrunk but I love having the head start. Where do you weigh in on the pre-wash debate?</div>

I had a customer who ordered an orange bathrobe, with orange trim and matching orange slippers. Typically I make all my bathrobes in white and use a contrasting trim but I thought this sounded fun so off I went. Sadly after the 3rd store confirmed there was no orange terrycloth in the area I was almost ready to give up. But my husband went online and tracked some down at a store on my way home, a little terrycloth miracle if you will! :)<br />
<br />
The sewing was straight forward and I was so happy with the results...I may even try some more colors for the etsy shop this year!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieHbNWyf1P-h5tFtomHhBKV_yKYW7IDtb-1d3ZbO_nv1YV1ywGy8mh6S4VwipP8s-5uNa35ScLxvuY0qYAl8LFSkW4kXY2iGgUUurQJkP4pR__yAiDs6t30uJXSv4-nSpUR1l5wC4MS6Ur/s1600/IMG_1638.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieHbNWyf1P-h5tFtomHhBKV_yKYW7IDtb-1d3ZbO_nv1YV1ywGy8mh6S4VwipP8s-5uNa35ScLxvuY0qYAl8LFSkW4kXY2iGgUUurQJkP4pR__yAiDs6t30uJXSv4-nSpUR1l5wC4MS6Ur/s1600/IMG_1638.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So it wasn't exactly sewing for my kids....but I still think it was a great start to Kid's Clothing Week!</div>

<a href="http://blog.kidsclothesweek.com/" rel="home" title="kids clothes week blog"><img alt="" src="http://blog.kidsclothesweek.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/logo-winter14.png" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I can't wait. After wrapping up a recent trip to the fabric store with my youngest I have a nice list of projects that will be perfect to start next week! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After months without requests the "can you make me" requests have started again. It's been a hard balance, when I started sewing it was intended to be for the kids, home made costumes maybe a party dress or two, a cute bow tie. Then it turned into a business and this year with the etsy shops being busier than ever the pleasure sewing the "we can make anything" fun that I used to have with the kids has fallen by the wayside. But it's back, I'm working on my first tutorial (which I hope to post early next month), I'm making new products for the shops and I have the beginning of a KCW Challenge list. Time to charge up the camera and make sure I'm stocked up on thread! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My sewing list:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
pajama's (his & hers)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
spring dress</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
light weight vest</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Jake vest for the dress up box</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I've started the week with more ambitious lists, but here's hoping a few season's of experience will have given me a more realistic goal!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Happy sewing!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div align="left" style="text-align: center;">

Since the New Year, with everything a little bit quieter, I've managed to finish up some of the little things the kids have been asking for (of course for every item I've finished they've added 3 things to the list), a neck warmer for the little boy, mitten clips for my daughter but by far my favourite project has been the ballerina bag.<br />
<br />
All fall my daughter asked for dance lessons but it was so hectic and I was trying to head back to work so wasn't sure where to schedule them so it kept being put off. As Christmas arrived I knew that there was no putting it off any further, she needed to be registered in January if she wanted to dance in a recital in June. So off we went to buy new ballet attire, register for the lessons and wait for those lessons to start. Her excitement was tangible as each little step brought us a little closer to starting class and as I pulled out our old dance bag I knew we'd need a little something new. In December I had picked up this adorable Michael Miller fabric and I knew it had to become her dance bag. Don't ask me why but I've been fixated on barrel bags for months now so the perfect fabric met with a months old picture in my head and in no time we had a finished ballerina bag.<br />

She loves it, I love it! Of course the critical part of my brain acknowledges the issues...the fabric was little light for this application, there's a few wonky stitch lines...oh well!<br />

I was caught flat footed by a huge volume of holiday orders which was fantastic but absolutely resulted in a drop everything and sew like the wind kind of month. Needless to say all the niceties of the holidays, the decorating, the baking, the wrapping tended to be last minute and done without the pleasure I find usually find in it. That said, the pressure on sewing got my creative fires fueled and I have lots of new ideas I hope to bring to life over the next few months.<br />
<br />
In the meantime I'm happy to let you all know about a sale I have going on now:<br />

Part 2It's been a hectic weekend, perfect follow up to last week and probably indicative of the weeks to come. Busy is good, right? I am the kids of person who fails at boredom, I can't handle it, if it gets quiet I start building to do lists and planning projects. That said, you'd think my house was decorated and my laundry didn't pile up but that's where it all breaks down for me, because I like doing fun stuff, things I want to do, not necessarily all those things that need to be done. As I was preparing for a craft show last month slowly working through the list of projects I had planned to bring with me a friend suggested baby doll carriers. Since I had a lot of things on my list already it seemed like a perfect opportunity to find a pattern and knock out a couple of doll carriers to take with me to the show. Well I was torn between some of the patterns I found on Pinterest, I liked the Oliver & S version but I didn't have time to order it so lo and behold I drew my own version based on the Oliver & S style, with a few modifications based on how my kids favourite creatures fit.<br />
<br />
They weren't a fast seller at the craft show, in part I think because they were and unexpected challenge to display but since then they have started to move on Etsy and I'm thinking for any gifts you need to send oversea's they can't be beat because they are lightweight and pack flat.<br />
<br />
Here are a few of the style's available, of course I have a few more fabrics in the works...maybe in time for my next craft show. :)<br />

Part 1Wow! There is nothing like one of those weeks where you are flat out busy, laid up with the flu and swimming in projects to remind you that the holiday's are just around the corner. This has been that week for me. Somehow I've managed to recover from the flu and still produce some great new items in time for the holidays. If you're looking for some fun stocking stuffers or some teachers gifts check out the new tea wallets on the site, there are new ones coming (as in I have them made just need to catch up on my photography!)<br />

Every time I do I berate myself about it as I anxiously await the results, hoping desperately that everything will be edible. It usually is. The other night I decided to do something I never do, try out a recipe that I would entertain with on my family, you know, learn and save myself some anxiety.<br />
<br />
So for a mid-week dinner I decided to test out a Souffle recipe. Best of all, it worked! I was so surprised and proud to have done it, I just had to share.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2p5KYbbDK4ffjs3YRZZwDb4yn9RSmn3J9_1zD6rgM4hx5mW2QnTPL-m7KCAJRtAeX04x_KRwwFmJbdT8rxuGM1pVnLp2UIySRJNglILAMh1bI4_7JjKNm4-UtBASvl6lQq9bdMxhd820-/s1600/IMG_1268.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2p5KYbbDK4ffjs3YRZZwDb4yn9RSmn3J9_1zD6rgM4hx5mW2QnTPL-m7KCAJRtAeX04x_KRwwFmJbdT8rxuGM1pVnLp2UIySRJNglILAMh1bI4_7JjKNm4-UtBASvl6lQq9bdMxhd820-/s640/IMG_1268.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It was a goat cheese and herb souffle (hence the vivid green colour) and even my kids loved it. If you're feeling like trying one out this recipe was from Essential Pepin by Jacques Pepin, a cookbook I love and have amazing success with.<br />

Happy Friday!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16161153656247227429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5063811194463319004.post-4529396885675841232013-09-25T06:42:00.000-07:002013-09-25T16:50:19.952-07:00Ready, Set, Latch - Prize SetI was asked to supply a prize for the National Breastfeeding Challenge taking place on October 5th. It was funny how it played through my head, at first it was panic - I'm a new business, there's not a lot of room for giveaways....then I thought of all those lonely night feeds and I thought ABSOLUTELY! we should get a prize for breastfeeding! All those early, uncomfortable and even painful days, the "I feel like a cow" growth spurts, the mountain of laundry because you leak around the nursing pad...they deserve some recognition. I know we get those beautiful moments where baby is so peaceful and the world seems to quiet just so not to disturb their precious slumber and it's rewarding in itself. But I found myself doing this in recognition of the not so peaceful moments, the bouts of mastitis, the improper latch, the colicky baby where Mom's persevere to do the best they can. <br />
<br />
That said, I still made something for baby because as a Mom I love cute stuff for my kids. It makes me happy and I hope this cuddly bathrobe makes another Mom happy too!<br />

I guess you could say that this week in addition to having 2 kids in school (kindergarten and preschool) I've also made the transition from stay-at-home mom to work-from-home mom. I know you're probably thinking it's a pretty subtle change and since I've been running my etsy shop for almost 18 months now I guess it is, but the mindset has changed. For the first time in over 5 years I have goals that are only mine and I'm kind of enjoying it.<br />
<br />
I really struggled with the decision to enrol my youngest in a full time program, but he is happy and challenged and with week 1 behind us, I think it was the right choice for him. Did you send your kids to preschool? or keep them with you until they were school age?<br />
<br />
On the sewing front, I can't believe the productivity when it's just me and the sewing machine in daylight hours. Of course I've been having so much fun trying out new patterns for my shop that I've fallen behind on the photography....but hey, that's what Monday's for!<br />
<br />
Anyhow, because I don't really have photo's of my own projects I thought I'd share a few pinterest finds that have inspired me this week:<br />
<br />

I first created it in March but then was reluctant to publish it until I had all the photo's listed. Finally, as I set about trying to load a few more products I thought...why not publish the page and THEN finish loading the photos when there may actually be an audience to see them?!<br />
<br />
So I love to have you stop by an check out the page, I should have new photos going up regularly!<br />

These last few weeks of August I always find get a little insane, between trying to fit in the last few days of daytrips and fun before school starts and trying to get everyone back into a normal routine so next week's return to school is as smooth as possible.<br />
<br />
Anyhow, amongst all the insanity I've also had a great week at my shop. I started a new custom project just yesterday for some custom felt masks that I'm finding really fun. I have to say the reception to these masks has been excellent. My kids play with theirs almost everyday and they were even part of our own party loot bags.<br />
<br />
These are the standard masks:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3pwxxSy7SIvsxSGZmmdq6bHH5QGkxSz7lYAOZDx2_TxlrL2IC7P-8K8SzTjS3uDdxtFjfCE7y4p6-93tF-3n28c9zaX6yF_Nx7nEkzlW9YM_Tsu4uib_7tdj49pSNniNe9LPJ7u_Xrmu0/s1600/IMG_0520.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3pwxxSy7SIvsxSGZmmdq6bHH5QGkxSz7lYAOZDx2_TxlrL2IC7P-8K8SzTjS3uDdxtFjfCE7y4p6-93tF-3n28c9zaX6yF_Nx7nEkzlW9YM_Tsu4uib_7tdj49pSNniNe9LPJ7u_Xrmu0/s640/IMG_0520.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS-KJCgMx5Ov4342UlRQRuLYiA3_Ga9M0MDdfRsF-Vz4c4mUf-kLzHGY9c-RVe3Zh-EQ8K9-kAqbQL67aLBvBSv59ZbEA-lzd4q_cyGOXgwHdz0ZU3Xa9gLmIX78pyEyKUbToJr5drMRhM/s1600/IMG_0515.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS-KJCgMx5Ov4342UlRQRuLYiA3_Ga9M0MDdfRsF-Vz4c4mUf-kLzHGY9c-RVe3Zh-EQ8K9-kAqbQL67aLBvBSv59ZbEA-lzd4q_cyGOXgwHdz0ZU3Xa9gLmIX78pyEyKUbToJr5drMRhM/s640/IMG_0515.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
For this custom project I'm making the masks a little bigger to accomodate some embellishment and I think they are super cute for a fun mixed birthday party.<br />
<br />

In my fantasy this really looks like 3-4 new items per week. Reality is a little more like 1-2 items. I'm ok with that, especially since its summer and the kids are home, the sun is shining and calling us outside. Here are a few of the new pieces listed this past week:<br />

Throughout the week there are so many things that catch my eye (nice way to say I spend to much time on Pinterest) and with a 3 year old and a 5 year old at home there is always something going on from crafts to new recipes.<br />
<br />
This week I wanted to share some of what's been going on for us this summer. We've found my daughter to be gluten intolerant. I'm grateful that her symptoms have always been mild (bloating, gas and occasional tummy aches when it's been a very gluten-heavy day) and that we finally have it figured out, but I was really hoping this wouldn't be the case. We'd already restricted lactose for both children, not too bad but I swear more people invite us out for ice cream now than in the whole rest of my life put together. Now with the added gluten intolerance I dread eating out, going to birthday parties and pretty much every social outing (since with little kids it's always about food). That said I realise that there are lots of options and people are very willing to try to accommodate us, we pack a lot of food when we go anywhere now. I know this will get easier, but eight weeks in I find it completely overwhelming.<br />
<br />
In preparation for school I've been combing Pinterest for collections of lunch-friendly, kid-friendly gluten free foods. Here are a few I've found that I like so far:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://childhood101.com/2013/02/gluten-free-crustless-mini-quiche/" target="_blank">Gluten Free quiche</a>, we've tried this recipe as both crustless (not a big hit) and a slightly modified version in a store bought gluten free crust (the clear winner).<br />
<br />
<img alt="Post image for Gluten Free Crustless Mini Quiche" class="post_image aligncenter" height="450" src="http://childhood101.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/gluten-free-crustless-quiche.jpg" width="590" /><br />
<br />
Next up on my to try list is <a href="http://glutenfreerecipebox.com/gluten-free-pierogies-recipe/" target="_blank">Gluten free Pierogies</a> I know you are probably thinking that pierogies are not your typical lunch box fare but they were easily the most requested item of the previous school year.<br />
<br />
And of course I need some sort of option for pizza day so we're going to try a <a href="http://www.momables.com/gluten-grain-free-pizza-crust-recipe/" target="_blank">cauliflower crust recipe</a>. I don't dare send this one to school without a test run first!<br />
<br />
<img alt="Cauliflower-Crust-Mini-Heart-Pizza-via-MOMables.com_-573x700" class="wp-image-7423" height="448" src="http://www.momables.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Cauliflower-Crust-Mini-Heart-Pizza-via-MOMables.com_-573x700.jpg" width="366" /><br />
<br />
<a href="http://projectrunandplay.blogspot.com/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank" title="Project Run and Play"><img src="http://i344.photobucket.com/albums/p330/shannonandjeremy/buttonprp.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Finally, because there is not enough going on in early September (heavy sarcasm here) I was reading the announcement of the themes for Project Run and Play and I am seriously trying to figure out if I can fit the sew along into my schedule...I need to sleep on it.</span><br />
<br />
Have a great weekend!<br />

I went looking for the dates but of course it was planned for the week we were away camping, not too conducive to sewing for an hour each day. To make matters worse, I only found the dates the week before the challenge was to start. So I decided I would just sew with what I had on hand and I would start early to that over the course of 3 weeks, in between summer activities I should cover the 7+ hours of sewing.<br />
<br />
For my first project I pulled out some left over corduroy fabrics, I'd used the solid for a spring coat a year or so ago and the floral had been a dress the previous winter. Since I didn't have a lot of either fabric I had to hunt down a pattern with judicious fabric use. The winning pattern: <a href="http://www.crafterhoursblog.com/2009/11/milkmaid-skirt-tutorial.html" target="_blank">The Milkmaid Skirt.</a> I loved that it wasn't design to be flowy or twirly, since neither of those would work with the corduroy and I could blend the fabrics so I'd have enough.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

A little surprise inside the pocket: <img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhhvJhao7kPF6Tf8iEUq0IOcwgx6j2A9RgDABQKc49mHstM2YzJScf3DzTYFBzrY9KZlsQFKy5PPOcsgwaLpBzph7YIc7OOjNfy2WnWBLHfvXuui5VfQ_6fp8EBcnA9bSb_dyII-P02Eud/s320/IMG_0910.JPG" width="320" /><br />

<br />
Overall I was very pleased with how the skirt turned out, it's practical for school this fall, it's something she really doesn't have much have for fall and best of all it's all made of scrap fabric making it an amazing deal!<br />

Yes, I did pluralize that...the second shop is officially open. It's still a little light by way of products but this week I should get across that 8 item barrier (I think my first shop was stuck there for 3 months). I'm finding it really interesting to sew for the different shops, it's as if they pull from really different parts of my creative energy and I find it's really working from me. Now, depending on my mood, I sew for myself, my children, my adult shop or my children's shop and it's blowing my mind how much is being completed. I'm thrilled.<br />

Here's a little peak at some of the new pieces I've completed:<br />

That's not to say I didn't sew (I actually finished 3 skirts) but between a summer camping trip and a plethora of new projects I just can't seem to keep up with the blogging (or the housework, but that's really another story). You see I have an etsy shop, plus a few listings on a couple of other sites but over the past 18 months my product list has expanded from a couple of small kids products and bridal items to a really weird collection of pieces. Well maybe not weird but the business part of my brain really struggles with how etsy posts everything in chronological order instead of letting me group items. Yes, there is the ability to sort by section but it bothers me that I can't control the first impression of my shop. <br />
<br />
In March when I first started planning this expanded product list I tossed the idea of a second shop around but I wasn't confident that I could keep both shops fully stocked. Instead I left everything in a single shop and hoped a full shop would make up for the hodge podge of items. Things still sold but it's been bothering me ever since. Then as I was browsing for supplies I came across some sites that were even more hodge podge than my own and much larger and I realised it's not the visual impact that's really the issue but somehow it's hard to have confidence when something looks unfocused.<br />
<br />
So here I sit with a decision made, it's time for more Thread! I'm still playing with the name of the second shop, I want it to be related to Thread but today it's still a work in progress. In the meantime I'd love it if you would stop by my current shop for a look around!<br />
